MANILA, Philippines – Over 4,000 volunteers participated in a clean-up drive at the Manila Dolomite Beach led by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in celebration of International Coastal Clean-Up Day on September 17.
Volunteers from the government, private organizations, and private individuals gathered at Manila Dolomite Coastline with their own garbage bags to help celebrate the ICC headed by DENR.
Meanwhile, the event was also attended by Maynilad Water Services Inc., Manila Water Company Inc., and the Dragon Boat Federation of the Philippines.
Additional trash bags were obtained from participating national and local government agencies as well as private organizations, including the Manila City government, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, the Philippine Army, the Philippine Air Force, the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Philippine National Police-Maritime Group, and the Philippine Coast Guard.
De Villa stated that 1,500 trash bags came from the DENR-National Capital Region, which comprises the DENR-MEO West, while 3,000 of the 4,500 sacks were distributed by the DENR Central Office through the Manila Bay Coordinating Office (MBCO).
Over 4,000 volunteers participated in the cleanup, which produced at least 4,500 sacks of garbage.
According to DENR-Metropolitan Environmental Office (MEO) West OIC Director Rodelina de Villa, the collected garbage consisted mostly of plastic wastes, dried water hyacinth, and marine debris.
The event is one of eight DENR-led cleanup activities in Metro Manila in honor of International Clean-Up Day, which is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of September. With the theme "Fighting for Trash-Free Seas-Pilipinas: Stopping Trash Flow at the Source”.
From the 12th of July to the 14th of September. Data from the DENR-MEO-West, whose responsibility it is to oversee the upkeep of the 500-meter beach walk, show that 147,939 sacks of solid waste were collected during cleanup activities.
De Villa said that the Manila Baywalk reflects the collaboration among all sectors that is necessary to address coastal litter through targeted beach cleanup activities.
“However big and daunting the task is, we can make a difference by bringing communities and people together to clean up beaches. Proof of this are organizations and individuals coming together at the Baywalk Dolomite Beach,” de Villa said.
In honor of the Global Coastal Clean-Up events, the third Sunday of September of each year is designated as International Coastal Clean-up Day by Presidential Proclamation No. 470, which was signed by former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in 2003.
