Philippine National Police chief, Gen. Camilo Cascolan designated Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar as deputy chief for administration, making him the second highest official in the PNP. Boy Santos, file
President Bongbong Marcos appointed former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Camilo Cascolan as the new Department of Health (DOH) undersecretary on Sunday, October 23, following his statement that he would assign a Health chief once the Covid-19 situation ‘normalizes’.
“I'm not a doctor but one doesn't need to be a doctor to be assigned in DOH. Administration and management will always be a part of every department in government and I believe I will be of big help in this area. What's important is the government's program is implemented with the directive of the OIC Sec. DOH," Cascolan thanked Marcos in a message.
Meanwhile, the Alliance of Health Workers condemned the appointment of the former PNP Chief, saying it’s an insult to the Filipino health experts who are most qualified for the position to run the Health department affairs.
According to AHW, PBBM's appointment of Cascolan is a clear manifestation of the President's extreme lack of concern for the lives, health, safety, and welfare of the health workers and the entire Filipino nation.
Moreover, the group asserted in a separate statement that “Cascolan's appointment runs counter to DOH mandate of ensuring the provision of quality health service that every Filipino people deserves and in upholding the quality of life, respect for human dignity and protect the health and safety of the health workers and the Filipino people.
Cascolan worked as PNP chief under the Duterte administration in September 2020 and co-authored the Double Barrel Project which aimed to capture high-profile targets in the drug wars. Then, he retired two months later in the same year.
